how do I create a new recording (demo) in COD and COD2 ?

I'm very new to all this demo stuff .

I know it is a noob question , but how do I start and stop a new recording while playing COD , and COD2 ?

I press tilde to bring up the console , but then what ?
what commands should I type ?

Record demo:
/record <demoname>

Stop recording:
/stoprecord
